I notice this article:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-14/google-maps-outback-queensland-street-view-inaccurate/100065310

A good opportunity to make sure the town is 100% accurate (and detailed) in
OSM.

Assuming we can locate some appropriately licensed sources of course - it's
a bit of a trek to get there in person.

Charles

Bob3bob has been there so we even have Mapillary images, at least for the main street. I travelled through there a few years ago and was surprised that fuel was so cheap – direct from the local refinery!

Cheers - Phil

I actually complained to the qldtraffic website as they use the Google
source. They also have other errors like toilets defined as disabled
when you have to climb 6 steps up! It's quite slow and clunky to use on
a regional 3G connection.

I was only in Eromanga (again) 3 weeks ago and have done a lot of OSM
fixes around town. I have retaken the imagery (now in 4K) as well -
covering all streets, but it wont be up live for a month or two. (upload
size and speed) Would anyone interested please critique my edits. I was
"caught there" behind flood waters for a few days. Some of the imagery
shows me driving through shallow/wide/slow floodwaters near there.

Diesel was $1.46/L at the refinery there, $1.55 at Thargomindah and
$1.75 at Noccundra Hotel

Cheers Bob

Strangely enough, seeing that it mentions Barcaldine, I've just had the OK
from them to use published maps & POI data to update mapping in a few towns
out there:

" Council is happy for you to use the online maps and POI details for
Alpha, Jericho, Barcaldine, Aramac and Muttaburra"

Haven't actually got in to do it yet, but soon!

Barky Council, at least, holds it's own copyright, not through a CC
licence, so that's good enough for us to work with.

I did think of contacting other Councils to ask the same question, but
there are, unfortunately, only 24 hours in a day, a lot of which are tied
up with things not-mapping related! :-(

Thanks

Graeme

Also

I did a lot of OSM updating/imagery around Aramac maybe a week ago. Am
going through Barcy, Jericho and Alpha in the next few days. Barcy is
kind of big and I have only ever done a few main street items. I'd
expect that I'd cover a lot of Alpha/Jericho though.

I am always amenable to more intense imagery capture if anyone needs it.

Cheers Bob

Thanks for the background info everyone and especially Bob for the
dedication to capturing the data!

After my initial email I took note of a mention of a specific business -
see statement in the article by Casey Owen - I planned to add her cafe on
OSM but couldn't find a single bit of information about it online - free or
otherwise - there wasn't even a pin on Google Maps, so I question how she
thought Google was responsible for promoting her business when she had done
nothing herself.

Anyway - I will check through the Mapillary images - thanks Bob!

Charles

Bob you're seriously a legend. So many of these towns would never have had
imagery otherwise.
Hope to grab a beer with you in Betoota!

Gee that was a miss Charles!

I took on fuel in Longreach this morning and studiously avoided the
traffic snarls in the main street... It's all angle parking down the
street and has a thick (tree/garden/picnic tables) island, so any street
imagery is badly obscured..

Sorry.... <grin>
